In Greek mythology, the Medusa was the most famous of the creatures called Gorgons. The Gorgons were depicted as winged females with lolling tongues and hair made of snakes.
The first mention of just one Gorgon, an underworld monster, occurred in the writings of Homer.
Later, the poet Hesiod spoke of three Gorgons - Euryale the Far Springer, Stheno the Mighty, and Medusa, queen of the Gordons.
In some myths, they were made by Gaea, who represented the Earth. In others, they were daughters of the sea god Phorcys.

While the Gordons were typically seen as ugly, Medusa was considered beautiful. It was said that if you looked into her eyes, you would turn to stone.
Perseus slayed the Medusa by cutting off her head, releasing Chrysaor and Pegasus, her sons by Poseidon. Perseus used the magical head as a weapon attached to his shield.
